Lightening strike blamed for broker blunder

Customers of insurance broking firm Jeffery Flanders (Consulting) have been told to contact their insurance companies directly after a lightening strike destroyed financial records, and apparently the telephone line, at the West Sussex-based firm.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) issued the advice after a Jeffery Flanders customer found they did not have the cover they believed they had.

“The FSA has been advised by Jeffery Flanders (Consulting) that due to storm damage the firm has lost all relevant financial records,” the FSA said in a statement.

“We have also received information that a current customer has become aware, when making a recent claim, that they did not have the insurance cover they believed to have been arranged by Jeffery Flanders (Consulting) Limited.”

There’s a risk that cover purchased from Jeffery Flanders hasn’t been underwritten, the FSA said, meaning that customers who have purchased policies from the broker could be without cover.

Consumers who find they’re not covered should make alternative arrangements immediately and then contact the FSA, the regulator said.
