Torus appointment marks move into frontier markets
Global specialty insurer, Torus, has appointed David Turp as a London-based senior underwriter, offshore energy, in a move aimed at expanding its book of business into frontier markets.
Mr Turp was previously senior energy and non marine class underwriter with SOVAG, the Russian-backed company specialising in writing Eastern European risk.
He has over 20 years’ energy and non marine insurance experience, both in underwriting and broking; prior to his employment with SOVAG, he was associate director of Heath Lambert’s energy division.
Torus team leader, David Message, comments: “We’re building a significant business in upstream energy and David’s expertise in the frontier energy markets of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other countries of the former Soviet Union adds an important new dimension to Torus’ offering.”
Further senior appointments are expected over the coming months.
Torus provides property, casualty and specialty insurance as well as reinsurance products to a global client base through its UK, US and Bermuda-based subsidiaries.
Areas of expertise include complex property, energy, power, utility and construction as well as other highly engineered risk classes.
The group made a string of appointments in the US last month: Naveen Anand as global chief operating officer; William K. McArthur as vice president, senior power & utilities underwriter; Dennis Johnson and Mark Mowinski as vice presidents, senior property underwriters, and Debbie Landes as vice president, senior onshore energy underwriter.
