Saga advises boat owners to lock up

Saga Boat Insurance has advised boat owners to lock away valuables out of sight.

Wet weather gear, GPS navigation equipment and valuable personal items should all be securely stored, or removed from vessels that will be unused for a period of time, Saga said.

Curtains should be closed when the boat is moored, and life-rafts, tenders, and motors should be secured with good quality locks.

Metals such as copper and bronze may also be targeted by thieves, so plaques, bells and statues should be covered if possible.

Over-50s financial services specialist Saga issued the advice after revealing theft as the second most frequent claim on boat insurance, with an average payout of £1,218.

The most frequent claim for boat owners is hitting a submerged object, with the average collision claim costing £2,394.

Over-50s make up 41% of boat owners and are 19% more likely to hit a submerged object whilst cruising, Saga said.
