ABI gives support to Opposition reform plans
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has responded to the statement by Shadow Chancellor George Osborne regarding Conservative proposals for reforming the financial regulatory system of the United Kingdom.
Director General Stephen Haddrill has said he welcomes the clarity and detail provided by the Opposition in relation to their proposals.
However, Haddrill did say that however the regulatory system is reformed the differences between banking and insurance should not be forgotten and added that insurance regulation had worked far better than that of the banking sector.
The proposed Financial Policy Committee within the Bank of England has the backing of the ABI as it would help counter systemic risk.
The Committee would also be responsible for supervision of City bonuses.
Haddrill went on to say that there must be progress made in removing underlap and overlap issues between regulators and that sound communication is essential.
