Aviva alerts parents to breaking glass
As the Ashes season inspires Britain’s would-be cricketers, Aviva has issued some sensible advice to parents.
The insurer warns that outdoor games play their part in a 20% rise in broken glass claims during summer months, as a combination of enthusiasm and limited skill directs cricket, tennis and footballs through greenhouses and conservatories and into living rooms.
The group’s director of property claims, Greg Gladwell, advises homeowners: “You are covered with Aviva’s home insurance if you have an accident with any glass in your home, so you don’t have to worry too much if balls go flying, but in the interests of good parent and child relations, over the summer holidays, it might be better to avoid any potential mishaps in the first place.”
Overall the insurer sees a 10% increase in accidental damage claims in summer with mishaps peaking over the August Bank holiday weekend.
Incidents involving spilt drinks on carpets and sofas and broken electrical gadgets, such as game consoles and Ipods, top the list with the average cost of an accident around the home coming in at just under £600.
Those with offspring too young to be wielding a bat and ball might like to follow up on Aviva’s offer of free life insurance to new parents.
Cover of up to £10,000 is being offered to the parents of babies aged less than six months, and lasts until the child’s first birthday.
