Airlines to bar Swine flu passengers
Travellers showing signs of Swine flu could be barred from boarding certain UK airlines.
According to several press reports, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic customers that show symptoms of the illness will need a doctor’s certificate confirming they are Swine flu free, before they are handed their boarding passes.
Speaking to The Times, the British Medical Association’s representative on the pandemic, Peter Holden, suggested that such fit-notes would not be worth the paper they are written on because people could easily become ill between leaving a GP’s surgery and turning up at an airport.
Travel insurers will no doubt be following up the reports which come as the Government prepares to launch its National Pandemic Flu Service in England.
Unlike airlines’ reported demands for fit-notes, the new hotline and internet service aims to relieve the pressure on frontline NHS staff.
