Aon France launches holiday rainfall cover
Aon France has launched an innovative travel policy that compensates holidaymakers whose vacations are “rained off”.
The policy pays out if there are a minimum of four rainy days in any one week, according to a report from Reuters.
The occurrence of rainfall is validated using satellite photography supplied by the French weather bureau, with a maximum payout of €400.
Settlement occurs automatically, with the policyholder advised by text compensation is due.
A pilot study from last year indicated that 10% of those interested in buying the cover experienced sufficient rain while on holiday to receive a payment.
US firm, WeatherBill, offers a similar deal for the organisers of large events, paying out if there is an agreed amount of rainfall during the event dates.
The cover is non-insurance based and therefore requires no proof of loss or claims process.
Payment is based entirely on local weather data.
