MORE TH>N is raising awareness about cash-for-crash insurance fraud, having discovered that 41% of drivers have never heard of the crime.
The firm describes cash-for-crash as form of “highway-banditry” and while cases have fallen by 11% in the past two years as the result of actions by the police and insurers, awareness levels among drivers have not risen.
The crime could therefore go unreported if the victim does not recognise the signs.
In addition to the usual safe motoring tips, such as leaving plenty of stopping space, MORE TH>N provides the following cash-for-crash advice.
Be aware that if witnesses appear surprisingly quickly to offer assistance they may be a part of the act; doctors and mechanics have also been known to be involved, helping to inflate the value of claims.
Criminals may act unpredictably and disable their brake lights, making it harder for the victim driver to avoid a collision.
A vehicle to the rear may be involved in the scam and push the victim’s car forward to make sure impact takes place.
Anyone who suspects they have been involved in a staged accident should say nothing at the scene and advise their insurance company of their suspicions.
Pictures of the accident scene, driver and any passengers should be taken if possible, plus vehicle damage.
Be wary of any companies that make contact quickly offering to undertake repairs.
Finally, anyone who knows the identity of a cash-for-crash fraudster should contact the IFB Cheatline on 0800 328 2550.
