According to a survey by KPMG International and the Economist Intelligence Unit, insurance executives are beginning to feel tentatively optimistic regarding the prospects of the next 12 months.

Many of those surveyed in March and April expected to see some growth during the next year. The executives came from 49 countries and numbered 315 in total.

Over half (55%) forecast growth of an organic nature, with 53% predicting growth due to M&A activity.

The area of least optimism was share price, with just two in five (40%) expecting to see it rise over the course of the next 12 months.

Frank Ellenbuerger, head of KPMG’s Global Insurance practice, explained that the insurance industry had not been battered as severely as the banking sector and were perhaps therefore more optimistic than others in the financial services sector.

Ellenbuerger’s opinion is bolstered by the fact that a CBI survey in January of this year also showed that insurers tended to be more optimistic than others regarding the future.
