Leisure insurance specialist, Towergate Bakers, is introducing a carbon offsetting policy for caravan owners.

The firm claims that caravan enthusiasts have a high level of “green” awareness compared to the public in general and are already more likely to be offsetting flights and using energy efficient products.

It has therefore developed a range of online caravan products and pledged to pass the savings made on postage and processing time to offset the carbon emissions of customers, who will face no extra cost.

The recession is expected to increase the number of people opting for UK caravan holidays this summer.

The National Caravan Council estimates that an additional two million vacations could be taken, bringing the number of holidays involving touring caravans, motorhomes and caravan holiday homes to nearly 14 million in 2009.

The Council points out that this type of holiday allows people to control costs because it offers choices such as eating in or out and including the family pet.

The body is also hopeful that a rise in awareness of “green” holiday options will create new converts.
