Britons risk uninsured driving by delaying MOT renewals

uSwitch has revealed an alarming level of reluctance among UK motorists to renew MOTs on time.

A recent survey from the price comparison website indicates that every year, 4.7 million Britons drive without an MOT and thereby invalidate their car insurance for the period of the lapse.

One third of respondents in this category took up to one month after the expiry date to book a test and 10% strung the process out even longer.

Eighty per cent of drivers who admitted to missing the renewal date put the problem down to forgetfulness, while 11% made their excuses by saying they were in the process of changing their car.

At a time when few households can afford unnecessary expense, uSwitch is reminding motorists that driving without a valid MOT carries a £1,000 fine.

In addition, as car insurance is invalidated, costs can soar if the vehicle is involved in an accident and any motorist prosecuted for driving without insurance can expect to see their premium rise by around 43%.

Fifty-one percent of those questioned said they would like to receive a reminder for their MOT renewal date, although a formal government scheme similar to that used for road tax would inevitably hike the cost of the test, which currently stands at £54.00.
