Flood victims appreciate rapid insurance response
Gary Burgess, an inspector for Cornish Mutual Insurance, has been praised for his work supporting flood victims and assisting them in their recovery.
Six months ago a heavy hailstorm struck Ottery St Mary, and Burgess led Cornish Mutual’s response to the freak event.
Only hours after the incident he was present at the scene, and began to help policyholders by sending them loss adjusters and flood damage restoration specialists.
Houses and cars were hit by a double whammy of hail (1′) and flooding (4′) which caused serious and widespread damage to the community.
A number of individuals had to be rescued as the settlement was all but cut off.
Alan Goddard, Cornish Mutual’s MD, has lauded Burgess’ swift response helping those afflicted by flash flooding.
Alan Maynard, a resident in the Devon town, saw his car washed into the river and his furniture, carpets and white goods ruined by the floodwater.
Maynard also praised Burgess’ rapid response, adding that he had returned a number of times whenever an issue had required resolution.
With flooding a more prominent and well-known problem in recent times, insurance against it has become more important.
Worryingly, the ABI stated earlier this year that those with homes in flood plains would find insurance increasingly difficult to acquire.
In November of last year the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba) called for the problem to be addressed by improved co-operation by the insurance industry and the Government.
