NU boss apologises for confusion over job cuts
The chief executive of Norwich Union (NU) General Insurance has apologised for sending “conflicting messages” over job cuts.
In a recent interview with Professional Broking magazine, Igal Mayer indicated that there would be no redundancies announced during the remainder of this year.
However, last week, NU owner Aviva said it is proposing to cut 1,100 jobs in the months ahead, 480 of which are based in Norwich.
The group will at the same time “close” 590 contract positions, which will go over the next few months.
Speaking to the Eastern Daily Press at the weekend, Mr Mayer attempted to put the record straight, stating: “I know some people feel they have had conflicting messages from us in recent months and I am sorry if either our employees or people in the wider community feel that, in emphasising our commitment to the city [Norwich], we are not clear that there may be a need for further changes ahead in different parts of the business.”
He went on to reassure: “Norwich is the centre and the heart of our general insurance business … and it is absolutely going to remain so.”
