Towergate advises vigilance in the summer time

Independent insurance intermediary Towergate Partnership has advised individuals and firms to be on their guard when the clocks go forward on Saturday 28 March.

The advent of British Summer Time (BST) can sometimes herald a spike in the number of burglaries committed.

Lighter evenings can also encourage thieves to go after goods left in the garden, including plants, furniture, barbeques and tools.

Towergate’s Broking division CEO, Amanda Blanc, explains that many thefts are of an opportunistic nature and warmer, lighter evenings can afford criminals more openings to commit theft and burglary.

Blanc went on to advise that people should try their best to keep their goods, both inside and outside, as secure as possible.

In particular Towergate suggests checking the relevant insurance policies closely to make sure they provide adequate cover, locking windows and, whilst on holiday, having a neighbour check your home every few days.

In addition to the annual rise in opportunities for burglary, the present recession may further fuel crime fears.

It has been suggested that the recession could lead to a theft and burglary surge, which has led motorboat and yacht insurer Navigators & General to urge boat-owners to ensure they comply fully with any security requirements on their insurance policies.
