Theft from vans is rife in the UK, with 21 vans being broken into every hour, research from Direct Line for Business has revealed.

Over 550,000 vans have been broken into in the last three years – hardly surprising considering one in six van drivers don’t bother to lock their vehicle.

Half of vans have no alarm fitted, whilst 42% lack an immobilizer.

Meanly, just 36% of van owners empty their vehicles of tools and other valuables at night.

Only one third of van drivers polled by Direct Line had insurance in place to cover the van’s contents.

Former tradesman and TV presenter Tommy Walsh commented: “If you’re a tradesman and somebody steals your tools, it not only stops you working, but some tools are like old friends that you trust and have had for years.

“That’s without even taking into account the cost to replace them.”
