Esure has announced that it is to create 500 jobs in Glasgow.

The online and telephone personal lines insurer says it will be recruiting 250 additional staff in the next 18 months and a further 250 by 2014.

The expansion is being supported by a Regional Selective Assistance grant of £1.4 million from the Scottish Government.

Esure chairman, Peter Wood, says he is “absolutely delighted” to be able to make a commitment to Scotland and to Glasgow in these terrible economic times.

The company already employs 610 staff at its Equinox office in the city, which is its largest site.

Despite strong competition and the economic downturn, esure has been experiencing a period of sustained growth and needs more service and claims staff to maintain its expectations for the business in the months and years ahead.

Earlier this month esure took second place for its motor insurance online application process in a survey conducted by Global Reviews.

More Than topped the poll with a rating of 57% and Admiral joined esure in second place, with 54%.
