Marsh survey shows recession also means opportunity

A survey commissioned by insurance broker and risk adviser Marsh reveals that UK firms think the present economic difficulties will present opportunities to enhance efficiency, acquire other firms at cheap prices and strengthen their brand leadership.

The survey, which was conducted in Marsh seminars in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Milton Keynes, showed that two out of three respondents did not believe the economic difficulties would end until 2010.

One in three believed the downturn would only finish in the latter half of that year.

An overwhelming 96% believed the economic turbulence could provide opportunities for well-run firms.

The largest single danger posed by the present economic environment, cited by half of respondents, was lack of access to credit due to the continuing credit crunch.

Marsh’s UK CEO Martin South explained that challenging times can also present opportunities for the strongest firms.

South went on to say that Marsh was supporting firms by identifying their changing risk profiles and suggesting the best method to steer their way through the stormy economic weather.
