Standard Club advises on evading Somali pirates
Marine insurer, The Standard Club, has issued a special guidance report on how ship owners can protect their vessels from pirates active in the seas around Somalia.
According to the bulletin, Somali-based pirates have been responsible for more than 60 attacks on ships since the beginning of the year, resulting in 29 hijackings and over 300 seafarers being taken hostage.
The criminals have become more ambitious and are targeting ocean-going vessels, as well as small coastal ships, which were once their only prey.
According to Standard Club’s director of loss prevention, Chris Spencer, the activity is not only causing uncertainty and financial loss but also has a devastating effect on the lives of seamen and their families.
The insurer is urging ship owners to improve communications and develop an awareness of the hazards presented by pirates.
The firm recommends that ships maintain a distance of at least 300 miles from the Somali coast and suggests the installation of long-range acoustic devices.
The bulletin also contains advice on how to make a vessel a less attractive target to pirates.
