Research from Moneysupermarket.com has identified the UK’s top 20 postcodes where residents are most likely to claim on their home insurance, as the result of a burglary or theft.

Residents of Horsfield in Bristol’s BS7 and Dunscroft in Doncaster’s DN7 postcodes are most at risk, with almost six per cent of households in these areas making a theft claim of some description, over the past 12 months.

The locations are joined in the top five by post codes in Canvey Island (SS8), Nottingham (NG8) and Birmingham (B15).

The Greater London area boasts seven high-risk postcodes, with residents of Brentford (TW8) and West Norwood (SE27) particularly vulnerable.

The price comparison website’s head of insurance, Peter Gerrard, has expressed surprise that Doncaster and Bristol are ahead of London in the burglary stakes because neither city’s reputation for crime rivals that of the capital.

He adds that the research proves that any area, regardless of reputation, has the potential to become high risk.

Mr Gerrard also reminds homeowners that as the evenings draw in it is worth paying extra attention to security as opportunistic thieves may take advantage of the longer winter nights.

Moneysupermarket’s research is based on three million home insurance quotes produced over a twelve month period.
