P&I Club Steamship Mutual has announced the appointment of Stephen Quartermaine as head of underwriting.

He takes over the position from Gary Rynsard, Steamship Mutual’s chief operating officer.

Quartermaine assumes the role with immediate effect, and is tasked with the supervision and co-ordination of the firm’s underwriting strategy on the world stage.

The organisation is aiming to maintain its strong financial position whilst simultaneously expanding its membership.

A record performance was recorded by Steamship earlier in the year, when it achieved a 17.5% increase in free reserves and a 9% rise in entered tonnage.

It also recorded an operating surplus of almost $28m.
