Specialist broker and risk consultant Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) held a seminar recently with engineers, lawyers, contractors and owners amongst the delegates.

The seminar related to tunnels, specifically the belief that a more integrated, collaborative approach to tunnelling risks by contractors, brokers, owners and insurers would bolster the future prospects of tunnelling plans across the world.

JLT consultant Darrell Corner has stated that the last decade has seen an improvement in analysis of risks pertaining to tunnels and that, accordingly, risk management has also improved.

Corner went on to say that it was the co-operation between the various players involved and continual availability of insurance that made so many tunnel schemes viable.

The seminar reached a number of important conclusions regarding the future.

Firstly, it decided that critical to the long-term prospects of tunnelling was a collective set of goals, to be reached through a methodology of collaboration between the relevant parties.

Secondly, lowering risks for tunnelling does not necessarily involve increased costs.
