Aviva has awarded a £300 million six-year contract for a communications package to Cable&Wireless Europe, Asia & US.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cable&Wireless will provide the insurer with a full communications suite for its 35,000 staff based in the UK and India.

The suite comprises 72 separate services, including voice telephony, data, local and wide area networks (IP-VPN and MPLS) and international services.

Cable&Wireless has been Aviva’s preferred telecoms supplier for 12-years and the new contract will see the company continue to manage Aviva’s existing communications infrastructure.

It will also introduce services such as IP telephony and IP contact centre services, managed Blackberry services and advanced speech recognition technology across the insurer’s sites in the UK.

The IP-based services should enable Aviva to achieve significant cost savings.

The network will cover over 1,000 sites in total and contain 57,000 individual telephone points and 74,000 data points.

Aviva is the world’s fifth-largest insurance company and its millions of customers are increasingly using e-mail and e-commerce tools to initiate and maintain contact.
