Research conducted by uSwitch.com has revealed that ‘on the spot’ car insurance, taken out when a car is purchased on the forecourt, is more costly than convenient.
According to uSwitch, the ‘on the spot’ insurance cost is an average of about 10% more expensive than if the motorist had approached the relevant underwriter, and 26% more expensive than the best deal available on the market.
The collective cost of opting for immediate, convenient but expensive forecourt car insurance as opposed to browsing the marketplace for the best option is thought to be as much as £48m.
The situation was exemplified by uSwitch, who highlighted the fact that a Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi’s forcourt insurance costs around £316.05, whereas RBS (who provide the cover for Vauxhall) would insure the same vehicle for £287.70, and insure.co.uk would provide the least expensive deal for just £246.55.
The research highlights the fact that browsing the market for the best insurance deal, instead of accepting the quickest and most convenient option, can pay real dividends.
