Baggage delay cover a must for travellers

Defaqto, the independent financial research company, is advising travellers to check that their luggage is fully insured before they fly abroad.

The firm has recently been examining single-trip insurance policies to establish what cover is provided for delayed baggage and found that 14% of policies did not offer this type of cover.

Baggage delays can be costly. Most travellers affected will be obliged to buy a change of clothing and other essentials, while some will incur the cost of obtaining medication that has to be taken regularly.

The research also revealed that for 40% of single-trip policies, the maximum amount paid out for delayed baggage is £100.

Unfortunately, the research will have come too late for the hundreds of passengers whose luggage remained on the ground last week as they flew from Heathrow’s new Terminal 5.
