Spike in burglaries expected as clocks spring forward

Saga has advised homeowners to be on their guard against burglary, as the rates of the crime rise during the period when the clocks go forward.

Paul Green, Saga’s communications chief, explained that the reasoning behind the crime increase is thought to be that lighter evenings make people feel more secure.

Green went on to say that another surprisingly dangerous time for burglary is during warm summer evenings, when houses may be empty with windows or doors left open as the inhabitants spend time outside.

The firm’s guidance is to keep windows shut unless the house is occupied, and to keep as many items as possible within the house.

Due to the high proportion, almost half, of burglaries that occur when the homeowner is on holiday, Green also advises that friends, family or neighbours are asked to keep an eye on a vacant home.
