According to new research conducted by Confused.com modifying a vehicle can increase its insurance premium by up to 139% (£545).

Using a 20 year old man with no claims/convictions with a VW Golf 1.5l as a template, the price comparison site discovered that quotes for cars with and without modifications varied by up to £1026.42, or 182%.

Amongst the most common modifications are spoilers, alloy wheels and lower suspension.

Confused.com’s car insurance chief, Will Thomas, emphasised that with modification growing in popularity it was important for motorists to realise that they could entail financial costs when it comes to insurance premiums.

Thomas added that certain modifications could render an insurance policy invalid, especially if the insurer is not kept fully informed.
