The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued advice to over 55s going on holiday, urging them to make certain they have the necessary travel insurance.
Year on year the number of older holidaymakers is on the rise, with an estimated 20% engaging in risky behaviour they would not countenance at home.
Slightly less than 20% report suffering an injury themselves, or their partner being injured whilst abroad.
A tenth reportedly do not behave in the safe manner which they would expect of their own offspring.
Despite the potentially enormous costs of healthcare overseas, 80% of over 55s do not go through a medical checkup prior to their journeying.
The FCO strongly advises holidaymakers to visit their local doctor and get checked out before travelling, especially if they are not feeling 100%.
Guidance is also given on alcohol, advising that its should not be over-consumed.
Lastly, the FCO urges holidaymakers, particularly the over 55s, to make certain that their travel insurance is sufficient for their needs.
