2007 travel insurance paid out over £400 million

Travel insurance providers InsureandGo have revealed the most-claimed-for top five of travel insurance in 2007.

Travel insurers based in the UK received a total of 1.75 million claims for the year, totalling over £400 million.

The most popular claim was for medical treatment, with over 500,000 claims insurance pay-outs totalling £242.3 million. Medical claims cost an average of £477 per claim, compared to an overall average of £231 per claim.

Lost or stolen baggage made up 430,000 claims, and cost insurers £35 million. Cancellation of flights accounted for under 200,000 claims, but these cost insurers a totalof £77 million.

InsureandGo’s managing director, Perry Wilson, said upon releasing the figures that it is ‘vital’ for UK travellers to be adequately protected whilst travelling.
