The prestigious Three Gorges Project of China, the largest hydroelectric power project in the world, has named Willis as its insurance consultant, awarding the firm a two year contract.

By 2011 the project, the largest concrete structure anywhere in the world, will be fully operational.

The Three Gorges dam will span the Yangtze river, the third largest in the world, and will provide enough power to run a city fourfold the size of Los Angeles.

The project is located in Hubei province, and will provide an electrical output of 84.7bn Kwh/yr.

Twenty-eight million tonnes of concrete, and 32 million tonnes of earth and rock fill will be put into the mammoth project.

Willis’ chairman and chief executive officer, Joe Plumeri, has expressed his pride at winning the contract, describing Three Gorges as one of the greatest engineering feats of the century.
