The ABI has warned that planning regulations need tightening up, if the government wants flooding insurance to be as widely available as is the case currently.

The ABI’s statement, made last week, also said that one million homes would be built on flood plais in the next decade, a full one third of the government’s three million target.

Thirteen major developments have been given the green light in the last twelve months, despite concerns raised by the Environment Agency.

Without flood insurance, and situated on flood plains at a time when anxiety over freak weather events is at an all-time high, the fear is that the homes would simply be uninhabitable due to lack of insurance against flooding.

The ABI has proposed that whenever a warning over flood risk is overruled or ignored the government should be obligated to publicly state why that action has been taken.
