Dr Marius Barnard has described critical illness insurance as one of the largest policies in the UK.
Dr Barnard created the product fifteen years ago, and has said that over the course of that time it has been refined and improved.
When it was first introduced in 1983, critical illness insurance covered only four conditions.
The modern day insurance now covers a greater number of conditions, such as functional disability and multiple sclerosis.
The inclusion of functional disability is something that Dr Barnard did not expect to see.
Commenting on the policy, he said that the greatest achievement it has attained is the ability to remove the threat of losing one’s home due to illness.
Over 12 million people are thought to be covered by critical illness insurance.
