Wii enthusiasts should check household cover

As the scramble to secure a Nintendo Wii before Christmas Day continues, Halifax Home Insurance is warning that major damage can be caused to televisions by those using the game.

When playing a Nintendo Wii enthusiasts can launch themselves at the television screen, causing damage to the set and any other household items in the vicinity.

Others, particularly the uninitiated, have a tendency to let go of the handset which can then smash into the television screen.

The results of a recent survey by Halifax Home Insurance suggest an unfortunate combination because one-in-five respondents want to have a Nintendo Wii this Christmas, while one-in-ten have plans to buy a new television set.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, is urging homeowners to check their cover as: “With some plasma screen TVs retailing at over £2,000, householders would be well advised to make sure they are properly covered and tell their insurer if they have a television of high value.”

The shortage of Wii stock is likely to last into the New Year but nonetheless, Halifax expects UK adults to spend around £11.92 billion on gifts this Christmas.

For the average person this represents an expenditure of £400 on presents alone.
