Technology boost for motor insurance certificates

Jim Fitzpatrick MP, the minister for road safety, announced today that steps would be taken to enable consumer to receive motor insurance certificates via e-mail.

The announcement was made at ABI’s motor conference.

The firm had been asking for just such a change in the law, arguing that customers ought to be able to benefit from technology in receiving their motor insurance certificates in an electronic form.

ABI’s assistant director of property, motor and liability, Justin Jacobs, described the move as one that would be greatly beneficial for motorists through an improvement in customer services that would bring the use of technology for insurance into line with other industries already exploiting its advantages.

He went on to say that future developments would allow for a certificate delivery service that was faster, more convenient and more reliable than at present. Such a change would also save the industry somewhere between 5 and 10 million pounds per annum, he added, as well as being more environmentally sound than current methods of delivery.
