Potential recruits to the Territorial Army (TA) should consider the impact such a commitment could have on their life insurance premiums.
The TA is part of the UK’s reserve land forces and supports the Regular Army at home and overseas.
Almost every major operation undertaken by the British Army receives input from the TA, which carries out broadly the same kind of work as the Regular Army.
Bearing this in mind, TA members, of which there are approximately 30,000, could be subject to loadings on their life insurance premiums.
According to Steve Couch, an independent financial adviser with Trafalgar Mortgage and Financial Services, “the accepting of the cover and the level of risk will be dependent on the underwriter and their view on whether to accept the risk; this in turn will dictate if there is to be a premium loading”.
Mr Couch also criticised the life insurance offered to regular members of the armed forces, describing it as “inadequate” and failing to meet the needs of many serving personnel.
