The president of the Chartered Insurance Institute, Lord Hunt of Wirral, is to lead an independent review of the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

The review will consider the openness and accessibility of the service to its customers and stakeholders.

It forms part of a programme under which the FOS board invites external scrutiny by way of three-yearly independent reviews.

The themes and focus of Lord Hunt’s review will examine whether the Ombudsman Service should to do more to be visible and accessible to those it is designed to serve.

It will consider whether the service is making the most effective use of the information and experience it has derived from its dispute-resolution work.

Lord Hunt expects to complete his report in around six months after which he will present his findings, and any personal recommendations, to the chairman and board of the Ombudsman Service.

Each year over half a million consumers and many thousands of businesses of all sizes have enquiries and complaints dealt with by the Financial Ombudsman Service.
