Home content insurers are promoting awareness of the value of the possession likely to accompany students leaving their parents’ homes to study at university.
According to Endsleigh Insurance, the average value of a UK student’s belongings is £4,200 and many students assume their possessions are covered by their parents’ home content insurance, when they may have only partial cover or none at all.
More Than is offering to make 15% of a policyholders cover available to their children, at no extra cost.
The insurer is also providing a 24-hour legal helpline on its home content cover, which parents and students might find useful should they need to deal with leases or disputes with landlords.
NFU Mutual’s Premier home content insurance policy provides cover of up to £5,000 per claim to any household member who is away at university.
The policy covers standard risks such as theft and flood, and provides cover year-round, not just during term time.
According to the British Insurance Brokers’ Association only two in five students have adequate contents insurance in place.
Many students are put off getting a quote because believe it will be too expensive for their budgets.
