According to a survey by uSwitch, approximately one in 10 drivers are likely to lie or be economical with the truth to when it comes to completing their motor insurance details.
Most commonly consumers are trying to save money by lying about their age, address and where the car is parked overnight.
In the survey, which was based on interviews with over 2,400 motorists, uSwitch found that 3% of insured drivers had not declared bans for speeding, or even drink driving.
The results confirmed the view that a proportion of consumers see car insurance as a “grudge purchase” and are prepared to get away with whatever they can.
However, lying about personal details or motoring offences can lead to an insurance policy being invalidated.
At the same time, a number of motorists are making genuine mistakes in completing their proposal details and insurance companies need to look carefully at their definitions, which are confusing some consumers.
